Welcome to our bullie pages. Boromir is the kennel name of Deane and Heidi Holland. That's me (Heidi) on the left with Zep 'Ch Boromir Bootleg ROM' when he was a baby. The web site contains pictures of our dogs, other people's dogs, links and pedigrees. It's aim is to give interested people an insight into the Bull Terrier personality and give enthusiasts a look at some of the dogs in New Zealand.

Our best Bull Terrier was Lilli who joined the family in 1987 and sadly left again in July 2000. She was the second Bully we had, and was purchased in co-ownership (partnership/contract/breeding terms - what ever you prefer to call it) from one of the established breeders in New Zealand. Lilli was what we would call the typical Bull Terrier personality. If you want to know what this breed is like around children, other dogs, and so on, check out her memorial here. The life and times of Lilli.

This is Lills and our boys in 1989.

There are a lot of dogs featured in this website, not all of them live with us. In fact we usually have around 3 - 4 dogs at home, the rest spend their days with families who are able to give them individual care and attention. Many of the dogs that can be linked to from the pedigrees live in different countries and offer a peek into how our pups were bred.

We have spent many years involved with the North Island Bull Terrier Club in New Zealand and served in various capacities on it's committee including President, Secretary, Editor, Show Secretary and committee member. I enjoy writing articles for bull terrier magazines around the world and endeavour to feature all winners, regardless of who owns them.

We have imported 12 dogs into New Zealand, either on our own or in partnership with other Bull Terrier Breeders. These have come from Australia, England and Norway. Our ongoing aim is to create dogs that are sound in both mind and body, and personify the Bull Terrier standard. But show dogs are only show dogs for a certain amount of weekends each year, the rest of the time they are just the same as any other dog and require a loving home where they will be treated as a valued part of the family.

HEALTH ISSUES - Every breed of dog has some health issues to be aware of - even cross breeds! Pedigree dog breeders who put in a little effort (and ethics) usually have specific knowledge about what is prevalent in their own breed. The major things currently checked for in Bull Terriers in New Zealand are...

UPC levels (by Urinalysis) to check for signs of Bull Terrier Hereditary Nephritis (checked and certified yearly)

Luxating patella (checked and certified yearly)

Heart disease (checked and certified yearly)

The above conditions are primarily checked by a general veterinarian. If problems are noticed at this check, then the next step is to go to a specialist to get more accurate results.

Polycystic kidney disease is a relatively new problem in the breed, but is easily eradicated in one generation by not breeding from affected animals. The ultrasonic scan needed to identify this disease must be performed by a specialised radiographer. This is a once only check.

Deafness has been recognised as a problem in Bull Terriers since the breed was first established. Bull Terrier Clubs around the world instruct members not to breed from deaf or partially deaf dogs. A test is available to check the hearing of dogs and puppies, called a BAER (Brainstem auditory evoked response) test, which needs to be done only once in the dogs lifetime. This became available in New Zealand in 2002 through Craig Johnson at Massey University, and maybe in time it will become a standard test for breeders to perform. The first litter of Bull Terrier pups to be tested in New Zealand was our 2002 litter from Ch Boromir Body Paint ROM, who (to our relief), all passed in both ears.

If we clear our breeding stock of the above diseases on a regular basis (like a car's warrant of fitness), then we are all doing our 'bit' towards creating a healthier (and consequently happier) dog.

PEDIGREES - Collecting pedigrees is a small hobby of mine. I have nearly 15 000 from around the world in a data base on my computer, which I am happy to share - these can be sent and received as Comma Separated Value (*.csv) files. How about sending me your dogs pedigree? If you have a moment to spare, you can fill out your dog's pedigree here (http://www.sitstay.com/pedi/) and email it to me!

BULL TERRIER CLUBS - There are two Bull Terrier Clubs in New Zealand; The North Island Bull Terrier Club and the Canterbury Bull Terrier Club (South Island). These clubs cater for breed enthusiasts - those that are solely pet owners, or for those interested in showing and breeding their dogs. Both clubs put out regular bulletins and hold conformation shows at all levels of competition. Championship and Open shows are usually judged by overseas specialists. A miniature Bull Terrier Club has recently been formed, this is not recognised by the NZKC yet, but will be holding match days, and sends out a regular bulletin.
